Here are 5 Success Lessons From President Duterte.
Lesson #1. Will Power Can Achieve The Impossible.
Every one who doubted the president, including me, believed that eliminating crime and drugs in 3-6 months is impossible. Yet on the first few days of his presidency, hundreds of drug pushers surrendered in droves. The president shows his political will in targeting even mayors and police generals. Thus, if something seems impossible, it means it takes will power to achieve it.
Lesson #2. Massive, Focused Action brings Immediate Results.
He didn’t take baby steps. He took massive, forceful steps. He made bold public pronouncements. He committed the resources of the government to the war. The results show the effectiveness of his approach. Therefore, immediate results need massive action.
Lesson #3. Make a Promise and Deliver.
This can convert critics into fans. I was critical before the elections but now I like what I see. I’m not yet a full-fledged fan, it’s too early for that, but I’m eagerly looking forward to what he can do for the country. When you’re in business, not everyone will like your product. But if your product delivers results, it’s only a matter of time before they’re converted into customers and fans.
Lesson #4. Have a Clear Vision and Communicate that Vision to your Team.
Your team will need a clear set of expectations because this war leaves no room for doubt. The President made it clear that no one will be spared. This clarity gives confidence to the police force on how this war will be fought. They are acting eagerly to meet these expectations, maybe a bit too eagerly in some cases. But they caught the vision and they’re making it possible for the president. That’s one thing that I would like to learn.
Lesson #5. Succeed in a Niche first.
The President succeeded in Davao first. While I believe he had no intentions to become President, his success in Davao led many to believe he can succeed as President. For us deal makers, before going after the entire Philippines, pick a niche first and succeed in that small niche. That success will provide the platform to go after bigger markets.
Finally, Lesson #6. Ignore the critics and naysayers.
They don’t matter. Once you succeed, they’ll become fans. I’m not yet a Duterte fan but if he continues on this path, I might become one before the end of his term.
